The Vampire Fiction Issue

VampireCompendium.com"To die, to be really dead. That must be glorious... There are far worse things awaiting men, than death," says Bela Lugosi as Dracula in the 1931 movie adaptation of Bram Stoker's famous novel. Good evening, and welcome to the Second Annual Vampire Fiction Issue! It's hard to believe it has already been a year ago that I was putting together the Spring 2004 issue. At that time MT was in its infancy, and by comparison, I think it's pretty obvious how much this e-zine has grown in the past year. I published three short stories in last spring's issue; this issue has NINE short stories, one poem, a classic work of vampire fiction (1928) by Frank Owen, and the author interview with Bryan Reilly. Geez! No wonder I don't have any free time anymore--I think my life has been sucked dry by MT. But yeah, I'm loving every minute of it! And of course there's still more.

The MT Forum is being re-launched, and JJ and I promise to drop in on a regular basis and post comments and reply to messages. I really hope everyone will use the forum--I mean, that's what it's there for. Feel free to post your comments, ask questions, solicit readers for your work, or just talk about whatever is on your mind. Everything from mindless blather about nothing to high-minded discussions of literary classics is fair game as far as I'm concerned. I've also managed to finally get started on renovating my Editorial Page, where I'm providing annotated links to my own works of fiction and poetry that I've published in The Tome, as well as to other areas of the TowerWeb Productions web site that I wanted to highlight--things like the Vampire Compendium or the Art Gallery. Anyway, that's enough about me. The real focus here is all the great work that has been contributed for issue Number 9 of the Midnight Times! Enjoy!--JFM 4/1/05

Father Barstow Can't Run Forever by David ConnorFather Barstow Can't Run Forever by David Connor. David has been a long-time fan of horror, enjoying both movies and books, short stories and the occassional ghost tale told around a campfire. Having tried many different forms of writing, he has gone back to what motivated him to write in the first place, that is, a wish, a desire, to send goosebumps up the readers' spine. "Father Barstow Can't Run Forever" is his first short story publication. How proud he is to see it in Midnight Times.

Despite the years of dedicated exercise and conditioning, Father William Barstow discovered that walking, actually more like hiking, completely stressed out his body... (continued)

MISSED IT IN THE LAST ISSUE?

Well here is another chance to read the Christopher Allen Reed Interview, author of "Transparent."

NEW POETRY

Temptation by P. J. BittingerTemptation by P. J. Bittinger. P. J. has been described as inquisitive, spiritual, and light-hearted. She knows that on the other side of darkness there is light. But, at the periphery of light, there are shadows. Some of her writing contains more of one than the other, but it’s all in good fun. She grew up in a small Midwestern farming community and currently lives in Madison, Wisconsin with her husband. Her interests include fishing, gardening, old movies, and mysterious places.

CLASSIC FICTION

The Tinkle of the Camel's Bell by Frank OwenThe Tinkle of the Camel's Bell by Frank Owen (1893-1968). Owen mostly wrote fantasy stories set in China. He also wrote verse using the pseudonym Hung Long Tom, the name of one of his recurring characters. "Camel's Bell" originally appeared in the December 1928 Weird Tales, a magazine he contributed to on a regular basis. "Camel's Bell" spins a fascinatingly unique tale of vampirism around the moral that outward appearances can often be deceiving.

NEXT ISSUE:
The next issue of the Midnight Times will be published July 1 (Summer 2005). The special sub-theme is Tales of the Supernatural. I'm still accepting submissions, but time is running short. Deadlines for submitting manuscripts and a list of contributing authors whose work has already been selected for the upcoming Summer 2005 (as well as the Fall 2005) issue have been posted on the Next Issue page.

LAST ISSUE:
The Big New Year Fiction Issue (Winter 2005) was published January 1, and it was jam packed with eight excellent stories. It also featured an author interview with Christopher Allen Reed. C. Allen is the author of the short story "Transparent," which was published in the Fall 2004 issue of the Midnight Times. Click here for other back issues. There is also a Fiction & Poetry Archive listing all the past works by contributing authors.

It was a dark and stormy night...

ANTI-BLOGGING:
First of all, let me make this clear: this column space is where I figured on posting stuff about what's new, announcements, mindless blather, and so on (in the last issue I used it to highlight upcoming and past updates). This paragraph is not a "blog" entry, nor do I have any interest in doing a blog. The Midnight Times is an e-zine that aspires to be an online literary magazine geared toward new and beginning writers (at least that's what JJ and I are aiming for), so I don't think blogging fits into that mission--although right now I am in fact writing up to the minute thoughts off the top of my head. I guess you could say I'm "blogging," but whatever. Blogging isn't actually my intention, so I'm calling this an "anti-blog" just for the hell of it because it's 11:45 PM on March 31, and since I started MT I have made a tradition of uploading the new issue right around Midnight of the publication date. Yes, I am dead tired. I had a hockey game earlier tonight (I scored our first goal and we won 5-3!), and I have to get up for work early tomorrow morning (TGIF!), but despite that, I'm really enjoying myself. The only thing that is bugging the crap out of me right now is that I didn't get one of the things done that I wanted to have ready for the publication of this issue--that being my new Editorial Page. (I did get the Forum back online, though, and that was much more important.) Yeah, I've had weeks to work on my editorial page, but between trying to work on the novel I'm writing, reading all the manuscript submissions for MT, and getting everything ready for this issue, I just plain ran out of time. So despite the fact I said in the introduction above that I "managed to finally get started on renovating my Editorial Page," that is actually a big lie. I figured on working on it tonight, but I'm too damn tired from being up even later last night (working on MT of course). So right now it's just the same old crap on my editorial page has been there for ages. But I swear I am going to have it done very soon. I promise...
