The purpose of this vampire movie list is to provide a selection of movies that establishes a broad representation of the vampire in film. Obviously, not every vampire film in existence is listed here. Furthermore, the movies that are listed here are not necessarily presented as the best or the greatest vampire movies. While some of them are great movies, many of them are not. The main purpose is breadth of representation.
What is listed here is a selection of movies that represents most of the various themes, plots and various ways of presenting a vampire movie. For this reason (for example), you will find nearly all of the Hammer films--although you might think some of them aren't very good or worth mentioning. What you won't find are: 1) sequels that added nothing new to the original concept, 2) many of the vampire comedies--although a few of the best examples such as The Fearless Vampire Slayers and Once Bitten are included (but the forgettable Dracula: Dead and Loving It and Vampire in Brooklyn are not), and 3) really obscure movies that add nothing new to the genre and have been seen by only a handful of people. Also note that these are movies, not TV series, so the Buffy the Vampire Slayer television series is not listed here, but the original movie from 1992 is.
That said, if you have a personal favorite, or if there is a particular vampire movie you strongly feel I should include on this list that isn't here, feel free to contact me using the e-mail address on the Vampire Compendium entry page, and I'll consider adding it.
I have provided reviews for some of the movies in this list. They are indicated by the word "REVIEW" following the movie title. Movies are rated from one to four wooden stakes. One wooden stake: Awful (don't bother wasting your time). Two wooden stakes: Watchable, but don't expect too much. Three wooden stakes: Pretty good--definitely worth watching. Four wooden stakes: Top of the food chain--only the very best vampire movies are awarded four stakes. |
