The Reliability of Fitness Trackers: Do They Provide Accurate Data?

In the modern world of high technologies, few can imagine their lives without devices and gadgets that make our life easier in many ways. The sports market is not an exception. It is full of different devices that are targeted as tools for more effective workouts. Fitness Trackers, that have become very popular in the last few years, will help you to monitor such metrics as burnt calories, steps, heart rate, and pulse. Nevertheless, are the measurements trustworthy? Let’s find out.

1.  Steps

Professionals argue that the majority of fitness trackers measure steps throughout the day properly and provide accurate results. There can be some exceptions though. For example, the number of steps of people who walk to slowly can slightly differ from the real picture. Nevertheless, professionals also recommend wearing a hip tracker for more accurate results as wrists ones can detect a lot of hand movements. 

2.  Heart Rate

Another function that the majority of fitness trackers provide is measuring the heart rate. Generally, the results can be considered pretty accurate. However, things tend to be trickier during exercise. Since the heart rate can change quickly during the workout based on the changes in the intensity, the results will not always be 100 percent accurate. Moreover, sweat that happens during the workout can be a complication for the device: sometimes fitness trackers cannot measure the heart rate completely or give a false result. During the resting phase, there should be no problems though.

3.  Burned Calories

Professionals argue that this aspect of a workout that so many people rely on can be really tricky. The way that the count works: the tracker monitors your activity throughout the day and makes an estimate of burnt calories based on your weight, height, and other body characteristics. However, there is no guarantee that the device will get all of them right and the results will be accurate. Moreover, as we have already established, measuring a person’s activity during the day can also be a challenge. In this perspective, it is not the best idea to rely on the measurements for burnt calories completely.

4.  Sleep Rate

Many fitness trackers have this function but it is usually not very helpful. Considering the fact that the algorithm for tracking the sleep is the same for everyone, there is no room for individual characteristics that are so important for sleep measurements. 

By taking everything into account, a fitness tracker can be a useful device for managing and improving your workouts. However, we do recommend being critical and realize that not all the data will be 100 accurate although it will usually give a bigger picture.
